An Attitude at Sixty

Our sixties are all about attitude and mindset. Preparing for an adventure or a project at any stage of life is essential to its outcome. Getting the most out of this amazing time in our lives requires a clear focus, with deliberate intention. We need to fire up our attitude, and plan to make things happen. Imagine the fun!

You have ten years or less ahead of you in your sixties decade – and the clock starts now! Rather than see that as a negative, choose a positive attitude and see that the next decade is yours for the taking. This mindset will give you real sense of purpose and excite you with possibilities.

No more tired excuses like ‘Oh well, I used to do that’ or ‘I’m too old now’. Re-boot your thinking and ask ‘Why not?’ and ‘How would I feel if I never tried? ’

Our sixties require a special attitude, so if you don’t have one, go get one! Attitude is defined as: ‘A way of thinking or feeling about something’. This decade calls for an extra dimension of inner strength, deliberate thought and determined action, to uniquely shape the way we walk, talk, dress and react to people and situations.

How often do you hear, or experience for yourself, that women in their sixties are forgotten, ignored or treated as though they are insignificant? We can feel that people pass us by, that we are taken for granted and made to feel unimportant. I say: Think again! Switch on your attitude and get out there!

Jane Fonda’s brilliant TED Talk, Life’s Third Act, delivered in 2012, is enlightening: you can search for it at www.ted.com. She believes that the most important revolution she is now involved in is the ‘longevity revolution’ – changing a society stuck in the old paradigm of ageing as a ‘decline into decrepitude’.

Now in her eighties, Ms Fonda states that we are living beyond the lifespan of our grandparents, in a new dimension of life marked by wisdom and happiness. Like Ms Fonda, let’s defy the old paradigm by changing our mindset and our attitude to growing older by exploring the many possibilities available to us in later life. Personally, I’m so excited by life: every day there are possibilities to add something, be it a new friend, an interesting experience, an act of kindness or a new learning.
